Select the Best Image Format for Fast Website Loading Speed?

With so many image formats, it is sometimes difficult to decide by Website Design Company in Kolkata, which is best for each application. Each extension has its characteristics, being indicated for different situations.

JPEG is mostly used on the web for its small size, but PNG is more versatile and recommended slightly higher. Speaking of quality, EXIF and TIFF are beautiful but have compatibility problems with common programs.

Get to know about the best image formats for the web in 2021.

Images Optimization for Website

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group):

The standard format of the vast majority of users has a very high compression rate capable of making a wallpaper with Full HD resolution (1920×1080), occupying only 100 KB on disk. But this is only possible because the compression plays out part of the quality.

In several cases, especially on the Internet, the smaller file size overcomes the disadvantage of loss of quality. This is not the recommended format for those who want fidelity in the details of their photos and images. This does not make JPG bad, as it has an excellent level of compression – it is just less suitable for these situations.

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format):

CompuServe developed the format before JPEG for the old 8-bit computers. This was a good solution due to the quality limitations of the monitors and dial-up modems.

In web images that do not require a lot of quality, GIF becomes a better option than JPG, both for the higher level of compression and for offering more vivid colors. But, it is falling out of favor due to the popularization of PNG and TIFF, which are more versatile and compatible with the fastest internet speed available today.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics):

Developed to overcome the GIF format limitations, supporting millions of colors instead of the few hundred of the previous format. It also supports transparent background, lossless compression, and even animations, although not natively.

Animations must save as APNG (Animated Portable Network Graphics), which works very similar to GIF, but with a higher level of compression and high quality.

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format):

Considered by many to be the best high-quality image format to work with, TIFF uses lossless compression. But bear in mind that it does not automatically increase quality. It is necessary to use TIFF from the beginning, as opening an image in JPG and saving it in TIFF will not change anything.

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format):

Very similar to TIFF, it supports 8, 16, 24, and even 48 bits of color. Therefore, it is highly recommended in situations where the final image quality is much more important than the file size, as in medical images, for example.

Some high-quality digital cameras save the capture in EXIF so as not to throw away any details. But if EXIF is so good, why don’t we often find it on the web? Because there is more than one type, it is not a standardized format. Some programs, such as browsers, do not support it natively, leaving it restricted to specific applications.

Developed by Google, WEBP proposes to make images up to 40% smaller than JPEG without sacrificing quality. According to the company, about 65% of all internet traffic is made up of images, of which more than 90% are JPEG. So, changing to this format would decrease traffic worldwide and lower storage costs for companies.

Often seen as the future standard internet format, on paper, WEBP far surpasses JPEGs. Still, as is common in the computer world, the simple technical superiority of WEBP will not make it standard, since JPEG is already part of most people’s everyday lives.

Mainly used in digital cameras using lossless compression or with almost no waste of information. Seen as an excellent option for manufacturers due to its high quality, it suffers from the same problem as EXIF. That is the lack of a standard that normalizes all images in RAW format.

PSD (Adobe Photoshop Document):

Widely used by Website Design Company professionals in Kolkata, the PSD format is indicated mainly for users of Photoshop versions because it has support for masks, CMYK mode, text layer, alpha channels, and other advanced tools.

Many professionals in the field prefer to save the original image in PSD to maintain the original structure and generate other formats (such as JPEG, PNG, etc.) as needed.
